What inspires you to workout?

My adventurous spirit — My favourite workouts are full of discovery. Whether that means hiking an unfamiliar mountain range or simply trying out a unique fitness class, I always want to experience something new.

Reaching my peak performance — I'm in a competition *with myself.* I want to run faster, jump higher, and lift heavier than EVER BEFORE.

Clearing my mind — I centre myself through exercise. Even if it's just 15 minutes of stretching before bedtime, I always feel more optimistic afterwards.

My friends and family — We motivate one another by trying out new fitness classes together. The more the merrier, am I right?

What's in your gym bag?

A protein shake to jumpstart my post-workout recovery!

My yoga matt! You won't catch me practicing Sun Salutations on the cold, hard floor.

Refreshing snacks for my workout friends and I!

My trusty hiking boots. Also, by 'gym' do you mean 'mountain range?'

Have you ever worked out with a personal trainer?

For sure! I've tried a couple different personal trainers but have yet to find someone who suits my style.

Nope. I've never really been interested in hiring a personal trainer. I guess I'm more of a DIY person...

Yes, I'm working out with one right now and am pretty happy with the results... so far.

No, but I'm interested in trying it out. When it comes to fitness, I feel like I have a lot to learn 🤓

Which quote do you relate to most?

“Your body can stand almost anything. It’s your mind you have to convince” — Unknown

“Exercise should be regarded as a tribute to the heart” — Gene Tunney

“Of all the paths you take, make sure a few of them are dirt” — John Muir

“Healthy is an outfit that looks different on everybody” — Unknown

From 1-10, how would you rate your current level of fitness?

1-4 — I’m at the beginning of my fitness journey! I snack a little too much on salty, sugary treats and rarely *if ever* hit the gym.

5-7 — I’m content, but there’s always room for improvement. I exercise two to four times per week and avoid highly-processed snacks.

8-10 — I’m in tip-top condition! I sweat it out on a daily basis and eat a healthy, balanced diet.

5 / 10

Where do you usually workout?

At the gym! It’s sort of stuffy, but it’s got all the cardio and strength machines I need to build my body right.

In mother nature! I love hiking new-to-me trails, and the air is just so rejuvenating...

At the studio! My studio has such a peaceful, supportive vibe. Taking a class there is like hitting refresh on my mindset.

Anywhere I can bring my friends! I’d *almost* rather not workout than workout without them.

6 / 10

What's your favourite post-workout snack?

Smoothies (preferably with my friends).

A vegan protein bar. These suit my busy-bee schedule.

A handful of almonds. I love me some healthy fats.

Chocolate milk. I need a quick way to boost my recovery.

A colourful salad. I've got to get my vitamins in!

7 / 10

What's your biggest struggle when it comes to working out?

Keeping things new and exciting. If I’m not genuinely pumped about getting out there and exercising, I just won’t do it.

Scheduling workout sessions with my friends. Everyone has a million-and-one to-dos, which makes coordinating nearly impossible.

Not being too hard on myself. Sometimes I set really high goals then beat myself up when I don’t meet them...

Finding the right instructor. I’m pretty particular when it comes to finding the right teacher. I want someone calming but encouraging.

8 / 10

Fill in the blanks: Life is nothing without _________

Presence and patience.

A little adventure.

My friends and family.

A rock-solid work ethic.

9 / 10

What’s your next big fitness goal?

Losing some serious poundage.

Building strength.

Healing my mental health.

You're the... Olympian

When you set yourself a fitness goal, nothing gets in your way! You know consistency is key to burning fat and building muscle...

Whether it’s a CrossFit or kickboxing class, you give it your all. You’re the person in the front row sweating it out for everyone to see. Friend, you take exercising seriously.

On top of that, you appreciate a bit of healthy competition, which pushes your gym buddies to perform bigger and better.

But there’s always room for improvement. Switch up your intense routine by experimenting with a slow-paced class like hot yoga. It’s bound to challenge you in new, exciting ways!

Three science-backed ways to workout smarter? Read on, friend...

1. Listen to music

If you’ve ever hit the gym, you know how powerful playing the right tunes during your workout can be. Picture this, you’re just about to call it quits on your cardio routine when — all of the sudden — a remix of Lady Gaga’s latest hit comes on. And like magic, you’re good to go!

But did you know listening to music after your workout has some serious benefits, too. One study found that playing soft tunes right after exercising reduces your body’s recovery time. Pretty cool, eh?

2. Drink plenty of water

Maybe you’ve heard this tip a hundred times… But just in-case you routinely forget your water bottle at home, I’m going to tell you one more time. Keeping hydrated while exercising is 100% necessary.

Why? You might ask. When you workout, you lose 2-6% of your body’s water content, which is a recipe for dehydration. Dehydration causes dizziness and exhaustion, and it’s bound to cut your gym session short.

3. Try out intervals

There’s a reason everyone and their mother are trying out interval training: it really works! When it comes to burning fat, there’s no better approach to cardio than spiking up your intensity for short periods…

Then cooling off with a quick break... And spiking it right back up again!

Why? You might ask. Interval training increases your speed and endurance. It’s also the most efficient form of cardio, meaning you’ll have more gym time for strength training.

Who am I to tell you how to workout? Well, let me introduce myself...

You're the... Yogi

Friend, you like your workouts to be rejuvenating! You want to feel clear-minded and ready to take on any task... Sure, you exercise to work up a sweat, but you also seek spiritual nourishment.

By moving your body, you let go of pent-up negative emotions, which helps you keep your calm throughout the day… On top of that, you know staying in good shape is a way of honoring your-amazing-self.

You probably prefer classes with a slow-pace. Like — you guessed it — yoga or pilates...

But you can always switch things up a bit. Try experimenting with a high-intensity cardio class like spinning. You just might surprise yourself and find your new favorite workout!

You're the... Social Butterfly

You’re a real people person! Half the reason working out is to bond with friends and family. You love meeting up with your favorite peeps for early morning pilates classes then going on impromptu smoothie dates at nearby cafés.

Being with others fuels your fire! You love feeling like you’re part of a team, like you and your fellow fitness enthusiasts are all in this together *cue the High-School Musical song.*

You probably tend towards high-energy classes like spinning or barre. Why? Because they’re fun to do with friends!

And there’s nothing wrong with that… But you might try switching up your routine with something a little more solitary like a yoga class. This’ll give you an opportunity to focus on your form...

You're the... Adventurer

You keep your workouts new and exciting. And you don’t understand why some people limit their fitness routines to the gym. You prefer the great outdoors: hiking, swimming, and mountain biking.

You’ve got a unique perspective on exercise. You don’t see it as a means to an end. Which is to say, you want to look your best, but that’s not the only reason you get your sweat on.

You want to explore. To see new sights *preferably from a scenic mountain-top.* You can count on your curiosity for motivation.

But there’s always room to try something new. Switch up your routine by experimenting with a new fitness trend. If you’re looking for a bit of adventure, pick something a little weird like goat yoga 🐐
